Club Members are always up to something. Except for the hottest part of the summer, we have field trips to local birding spots twice a week, most of the time. We meet once a month to take care of business and listen to a speaker on birds or the ecology. We raise money through Birdathon to support activities to preserve birds and their habitat, or to educate others. It's not all work and no play though. We have a picnic in June, and our annual dinner brings in a big name in birding.

BECKHAM BIRD CLUB EMBRACES CORNELL UNIVERSITY’S eBIRDl 

President Paul McAllister recently asked the question, "What are we doing with all the records amassed over the many years of BBC's field trips?" It was decided that the club make an effort to enter as much of the existing data as possible into eBird. Currently, most of the records from past field trips are being housed at the Filson Club in Louisville and not doing much good for either party. When the data is entered into eBird, it will serve several purposes.

  1. Science will be able to garner information of possible changes over many years of concentrated birding in the Kentuckiana area.
  2. Rather than setting in a dusty storage area of the Filson Club, members will have access to it in eBird. It might be fun to look back to see whether things have changed or not.
  3. Once entered, the data can never be lost or destroyed.
  4. It becomes a part of a worldwide effort by citizens to contribute their birding observations to science, otherwise known as "Citizens Science".

We currently have all of 2010 and 2011 entered into eBird. Paul is busy entering additional years of field trips and I'm sure is looking for volunteers to help.

While we encourage anyone to visit the BBC eBird site, we only ask that you DO NOT enter any of your own data into this site. To enter any data of your own, you must visit eBird at eBird.org, and choose a username and password to set up your own account. Please, make no effort to add or delete any information. If corrupted, the data will no longer be accurate

KENTUCKY COALITION FOR SANDHILL CRANES

Kentucky Coalition for Sandhill Cranes Statement of Intent: The Kentucky Coalition for Sandhill Cranes hopes to maintain the protected status of sandhill cranes in the state.  Various state and federal government agencies plan to open Kentucky to sandhill crane hunting in 2011. The general public will not have a chance to comment on the proposed hunting season until AFTER the official meetings in which the hunt will be approved.  The Coalition feels that Kentuckians who oppose the new hunting season should have a voice in the process – and a chance to be heard while it can still make a difference.
